Melissa Van Bussel - Dissertation du lauréat, 2019

I am a 4th year student completing an Honours BSc Joint Major in Mathematics and Computing Systems with a Specialization in Statistics at Trent University. I hope to attend Carleton University for my Master’s in Statistics in September 2019. My career goal is to become a Statistics professor so that I may continue to share my love of Mathematics with others through teaching, and so that I can use Mathematics to answer questions about the world around me through completing research.

During my undergraduate studies, I have fostered my love for teaching through tutoring and through being a teaching assistant for several undergraduate Statistics courses. I have also volunteered my time to assist with Mathematics competitions for elementary students and have taught enrichment workshops for secondary students. Additionally, I have been very involved with my school’s Society of Undergraduate Mathematics Students, and in this role, I have planned many events aimed at furthering students’ love for Mathematics. I have also served on the organizing committee for a number of academic conferences across Canada, where I have helped bring together students to share their passions for Mathematics.

I have held two Undergraduate Student Research Awards during my post-secondary studies, which were focused on Statistics and Education Research, and have presented this research at conferences. I have also completed a couple of statistical case studies. I have always had a passion for Mathematics, and I look forward to pursuing this passion further through teaching and completing research during my graduate studies.
